Built By Wendy Translates Movies to Fabric

May 17, 2008 0 comments

Built By Wendy is a clothing line by Wendy Mullin of New York City. A lot of her t-shirts combine the nostalgia of movies with the artistry of illustration. My favorite shirt in that vein is Bloody Boys, which shows characters from Flirting, If, Harold & Maude, and My Bodyguard with red ink marring their beaten faces.

It's a great idea, because movies are so iconic. Just by drawing each of these characters, frozen in time, it evokes all kinds of emotions in the viewer. Dudes Gone Wild highlights some classic badasses of film (with a nice, subtle blood detail) while Ordinary People goes straight for the heart, showing Timothy Hutton's distress with a variety of strained expressions imposed over his failed lunch date. Some other shirts, like Boo and Scout, recreate scenes so they look like they're right out of the film itself.

I think these illustrations are a nice way to wear a movie favorite- it's a way to represent a film without resorting to wearing a catch phrase or a joke only fans will understand.

Earlier this week, Tank Theory has announced its new line for the month of May. As usual, guest artists are happily involved in production -- resulting in wide range of style brought to us.

First is from The Tank Theory Artist Society (specialized section aimed to invite today's premier artists and designers to showcase their works via Tank Theory wearable medium), UK-based artist James Roper has been once again invited to ink his imagination via medium of this tee called Saccade. Mr. Roper, whose personal website is up at www.jroper.co.uk, is not actually a stranger to Tank Theory fan -- in the past, he has contributed some other good pieces for Tank Theory such as Reflex and Fallout. I bet some folks would celebrate the comeback of Mr. Roper with Saccade T-shirt.

Another good piece come from T-shirt of the Month. Stained Skull is a multi-color waterbased tee designed by Thank Theory art director Zach. But it's the ladies who get special attention from Tank Theory with this tee called, Butterfly. Butterfly T-shirt features (as described on the website): "a series of overlapping prints, the Butterfly is given the effect of moving or changing".

There are so much surprise when you take a look at Trouble/Tease collection. Apparently, it's not only stylish wearable that Trouble/Tease offers but also the taste of contemporary, quirky-look artwork by TMH. TMH known as artist whose lovely works often about daily humanism pictured in unusual looking individuals and objects around them. I find TMH arts as mix of traditional arts that have modified to meet our modern preference.

But it's actually Trouble/Tease that brings these artworks to the next level. Trouble/Tease tees are hand-screened with nontoxic water-based ink. They are designed such that to showcase good printing technique of gradient colors combined with good graphic arts by TMH. You can even entertain yourself just by looking at the colorful image gallery of these shirts.

Trouble/Tease sell its stuff from Etsy shop and you're invited to inquire about sizes, colors, etc, and expect many more shirts in the weeks to come.
